Second ESD Consultative workshop
Education for Sustainable Development: A Focus for the New Educational Intervention
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the National Curriculum

IUCN Pakistan organised a one day consultative workshop on Education for Sustainable and the National Curriculum on Jan 5, 2006 in Karachi. It is the second one in the series organised by IUCN Pakistan to promote ESD in the country. The workshop brought together educators and communicator from Pakistan representing lead public and private organisation, universities and media. The Chief Guest Mr. Shamsul Haq Memon, Secretary Environment and Renewable Energy, Government of Sindh, speaking at the inauguration ceremony highlighted the importance of promoting ESD into the National Curriculum. He also elaborated the concept of ESD, which is the learning process both within and outside school, focusing on linkages between economy, equity and ecology. He stressed that the workshop participants should propose recommendations to bring ESD perspectives into the National Curriculum through the Environment Education Promotion (EEP) Project of the Ministry of Education, additionally these aspects should be integrated into the educational processes initiated in the post earthquake areas. Mr. Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Acting Country Representative, IUCN Pakistan elaborated on IUCN’s mission and activities

  in Pakistan. He also talked about the education and communication initiatives undertaken by IUCN Pakistan (IUCNP). Ms. Zohra Rehmat Ali, Coordinator, Environmental Education (EE) Programme, IUCNP briefed the participants about the concept of ESD and the initiatives undertaken by IUCNP for promoting ESD in the country.  A presentation on the EEP Project of the Ministry of Education highlighting its objectives and update of activities was made by the Project Coordinator Mr. Syed Mujtaba Hussain. Later on, Mr. Hasan Akhtar Rizvi, Head, Education, Communication and Knowledge Management Programme, IUCNP initiated the workshop activities. Mr. Abid Hussainy and Ms. Sadaf Jehangir from the Institute of Educational Development (IED) made a presentation on difference and similarities between EE and ESD. Afterwards, the plenary discussed the possibilities of integrating ESD into the EEP Project of the Ministry of Education, which brought interesting as well as quite differing ideas from the participants. Mr. Hasan Rizvi initiated the discussion on educational needs in the post earthquake scenario, whereby participants stressed the integration of sustainability issues to overcome the severity of damage caused by the natural calamities. The last part of the workshop focussed on gathering participant’s options on designing the pre-imposition campaign for banging the plastic bags by the Sindh Government. Mr. Irfanullah Tunio and Mr. Mirza Mujtaba Baig from Environment Protection Agency Sindh made a presentation on Government of Sindh’s initiatives in this regard to provide the pretext for the discussion.
